“Aging with Dignity” – Commemoration of Elders Day in Chennai

Adyar, Chennai ( Tamil Nadu ): The Brahma Kumaris of Adyar, Chennai, in collaboration with the Senior Citizens Support Forum, organized a program “Aging with Dignity,” in commemoration of Elders Day at the Kumararani Meena Muthiah College of Arts and Science in Adyar.

Meena Muthiah, Kumararani of Chettinad and Educationist; Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive Director and Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai; Dr. Mahesh N. Hemadri, Family Physician, Global Hospital and Research Centre; Dr. Chockalingam, Senior Cardiologist; Thiru R. Subharaj, Secretary, Senior Citizens Support Forum; and Rajayogini Sister BK Muthumani, Brahma Kumaris, Adyar, Chennai; were seated on the dais.

Rajayogini Sister BK Muthumani delivered the welcome address and mentioned that it’s the need of the hour to educate elderly people on maintaining their physical and mental well being.

Meena Muthiah, Kumararani of Chettinad and Educationist, mentioned that the younger generation is tech savvy. Along with such programs for elderly people, there is a need to educate the youth also on values etc., She applauded the services of the Brahma Kumaris for both the youth and the elderly.

Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive Director and Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai, iterated on the need to be financially and physically independant. The senior citizens should plan to be financially strong. He also highlighted the need to maintain a balanced diet and exercise. He also touched upon his association with the Brahma Kumaris.

Dr. Chockalingam, Senior Cardiologist, entertained the audience with his fun-filled speech. He shared how the elderly should pay attention to taking care of their health with a balanced diet, avoiding tea and coffee, and the importance of walking so that they can enjoy wellness and prevent heart problems.

Dr. Mahesh N. Hemadri, Global Hospital and Research Center, being the key speaker of the day, demonstrated simple exercises to check physical balancing to prevent falling down, as well as brain exercises; shared points of food practices, simple physical exercises, and eight reduction exercises; and conducted meditation at the end in silence.

Around 250 people took benefit from the event.
