‘Addiction Free Tamilnadu’ : Peace Walkathon Flagged off by Minister for Health & Minister for Environment

Peace march In commemoration of No Tobacco Day – 31st May

Chennai ( Tamil Nadu ): In commemoration of No Tobacco Day observed on 31st May every year, Brahma Kumaris, a socio-spiritual organization and Rela Hospital, a Multi-Speciality Quaternary Care Hospital at Chromepet organised a 2.5 km long Walk-a-through for a Healthy, Happy, Addiction free Tamil Nadu.

The Walk-a-through was flagged off by Mr. Subramanian, Minister for Health &Family Welfare and Thiru Siva V Meyyanathan, Minister for Environment — Pollution Control & Youth welfare and sports department, Government of Tamil Nadu and Prof Mohamed Rela, Chairman, Dr Rela Institute and Medical Centre in the presence of Rajayogini B K Beem, Service Co- ordinator, Brahma Kumaris, Tamil Nadu Zone.

The Walk-a-thon was kick-started from Olcott School, Besant Nagar, Chennai. Over 2000 people of various ages and from various demographics participated with fervour for the social cause. The group consisted of brothers and sisters of Brahma Kumaris, students from different colleges and other people who raised awareness slogans against tobacco use and carried placards and banners to spread awareness of the ill effects of tobacco use. This year’s International No Tobacco Day is being observed with the theme Tobacco: Threat to our environment. The participants were given refreshments, breakfast and certificates.

Prof Mohamed Rela, Chairman, Rela Hospital said, that we at Rela hospital, very frequently witness the harmful effects of tobacco on its consumers, when we see patients coming to us with end stage carcinoma, mainly tongue, throat, liver and lungs. We are very happy to join the cause raised by Brahma Kumaris in educating the youth about a way of life without tobacco.
