“Indian Community with Calibre” – A Special Project by Brahma Kumaris Malaysia

Malaysia : The government of Malaysia under the Malaysia Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA), of the Prime Minister’s Department of Malaysia, has approved a financial grant of RM 300,000 to Brahma Kumaris Malaysia (BKM). This grant is to conduct value-based education and leadership trainings for the local Indian community.  MITRA is an acronym that bears a friendly bond with the Indian community through supporting pillars toward educational attainment; access to economic opportunity and assured employability; social well-being, identity and inclusiveness. The targeted groups are those from the lower social-economic status in Malaysia.

The objective of the MITRA grant for the year 2019 is to implement strategic intervention programs together with Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) in order to intensify the transformation process of the Indian community. Brahma Kumaris Malaysia is considered to be an important NGO by MITRA.

Brahma Kumaris Malaysia with the MITRA grant has undertaken a special project called “Indian Community with Calibre”. This program includes activities conducted weekly at six identified locations in the states of Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, in Malaysia. The targeted participants are youth between the age of 11 to 17. Since the inception of this program in June 2019, a total of 339 students have participated and benefited from the programs. Sessions are usually conducted on Saturday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. This special project is scheduled to be completed in December 2019.

A variety of value-based activities are designed — such as team building, colouring competitions, indoor and outdoor activities and games — with the intention to ignite an interest among the participants to learn and work with others. These activities will enhance analytical ability, creativity, problem-solving skills and social skills. Both children and parents are very happy with the sessions. Parents, especially, are very supportive, as they can see that the children’s time is used in a worthwhile way and they can also observe the transformation in the children.
