Brahma Baba – A Source of Inspiration

Brahma Baba – Source of Inspiration

Born in the year 1876 into a humble home as Lekhraj Kripilani, Brahma Baba was the son of a schoolteacher. Strict Hindu tradition was induced in him from his early days. However, Brahma Baba didn’t follow his father footsteps and instead of becoming a schoolteacher he entered into the jewellery business and established himself as a diamond trader. Almost by instinct, he developed great expertise in judging the value of gems. In a short time his reputation and business grew. Rulers of the princely states of colonial India, as well as the British viceroy, became his friends and clients. They afforded him utmost respect — not merely because of his diamonds, but also because of what they saw in him. He was the father of five children and a leader within his local community, known especially for his philanthropy.

Dada did not have a great deal of formal education, but he had deeply studied philosophy and religious texts. A devout man, he was fond of going on pilgrimages and often invited holy men to be his house guests. He enjoyed conversing with them on religious matters.

In 1936, around the time when most people at his age start to plan their retirement, he actually entered into the most active and fascinating phase of his life. Dada Lekhraj, later known as Prajapita Brahma, and affectionately referred to as Brahma Baba by the Brahma Kumaris, was someone whose search for truth set him apart from those around him.

The journey was not at all easy. However, one day while meditating he felt a warm flow of energy and witnessed a series of powerful visions. He kept on witnessing these powerful visions for about seven months and then the inevitable thing finally happened. His innate vision and his insight knowledge bestowed him with unexampled insights into the innate qualities of human souls whilst revealing the mystifying, deep, and cryptical entity of God. Thus Brahma Baba identified the course of “world transformation”. The intensity of this sheer understanding was so vivid, it was so very much pulsating that Brahma Baba was somewhat compelled to finish off his worldly business and finally devote himself to this supreme understanding and application of this revealed knowledge.

After a series of deep spiritual experiences and visions, he felt an extremely strong pull to give up his business and dedicate his time, energy, and wealth to laying the foundations of what later would become the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University. It was a series of visions that he received during deep contemplation that heralded the beginning of a life of such purity and simplicity that hundreds flocked to be near him and follow his example.

Between 1937 and 1938, he formed a Managing Committee of eight young women and surrendered all his property and assets to a Trust administered by them. Prajapita Brahma perfectly understood this message that was given through him and consequently gave his wealth, his life, and his every thought to the upliftment of humanity. His life of truth, purity, peace, love, and humility has become an inspiration for thousands.

Brahma Baba became the instrument to uplift thousands with a special virtue of generosity. He surrendered his wealth for the establishment and sustenance of the young organization then. He especially educated the mothers and young women who did not receive formal schooling as it was a tradition in those days. He helped others develop their strengths by always highlighting their virtues, not their weakness. He sustained any soul who came in front of him with his wisdom, love, and respect.

Brahma Baba, as he was fondly called, was a constant source of inspiration and wisdom for everyone. He spent a lot of time in solitude, reflecting on spiritual knowledge. He re-educated his mind to comprehend from every perspective the meaning of contemporary events and eternal verities. Despite opposition from families, Brahma Baba remained a carefree emperor. Instead of asking why certain things happened, he put a full-stop in every situation by thinking about its benefit. His faith in God as his one strength and support enabled him to be constantly unshakeable. He became a living example for others to follow. To this day, stories of his special qualities and how he touched lives even with his silent presence are told in books, films, and articles in the organization.

Brahma Baba, in his corporeal form, was unique in many ways. By his own high character, not only did he mould the character of those who came into touch with him but his character moulded a new civilization out of the present degenerated one.

After guiding the creation of many Brahma Kumaris centers throughout India, at the age of 93, in the year 1969, Brahma Baba passed away. The tower of peace located at the Madhuban Campus is thus a tribute to this great persona; an honor to Brahma Baba who was once an ordinary being but attained that magnitude by realizing the sheer truths of life. Every year on January 18, the BKs hold a special and very powerful day of silence and remembrance in honour of Brahma Baba.
